The range of the Clouded Leopard today extends from Nepal and Sikkim in the north, down through Burma, Thailand, and China, and south to Taiwan, Malaya, Borneo, and Sumatra.

The deforestation of its habitat poses an obvious threat to the clouded leopard, and it is believed to have become extinct in Taiwan. The clouded leopard has also been ruthlessly hunted for its beautiful pelt and its numbers are therefore on the decline. In earlier days, an unusual extra problem
for this particular cat was that, in Borneo, its canine teeth were highly sought after by the local people as ear-ornaments, and its pelt was used as a war-coat.
